A versatile Manchester City defender appears to be on his way to Inter Milan

Over the past week, it has seemed that Manuel Akanji would leave Manchester City. The Swiss international hasn’t featured in any of Manchester City’s first three games of the new Premier League season. Based on that fact, it did seem that a summer move was the best move for Akanji. He could be a regular contributor elsewhere, and the process of City trimming the size of their squad would continue.
It has now been reported that Manuel Akanji is set to complete a loan move to Inter Milan for the 25/26 season. That is a good move for Akanji and for Manchester City.
Fabrizio Romano has reported that Manuel Akanji is set to complete a loan move to Inter Milan. Furthermore, Romano reports that Akanji will complete a medical with Inter today. The Swiss international has agreed to move to the Serie A giants, per Fabrizio Romano’s report. It is also reported that Manchester City will receive a €2 million loan fee for Akanji from Inter. There is also a €15 million buy option included in the deal, which only becomes mandatory if a certain set of triggers is reached.
Manchester City desperately needs to trim the size of their squad. Pep Guardiola’s desire to work with a smaller squad is well-documented. To fulfil Guardiola’s demands, players have to leave the club today. Manuel Akanji looks set to be one of those players.
It is the best move for Akanji to leave City. Based on what has transpired this season, it seems that Akanji would be starved of opportunities. A loan move to Inter does allow Akanji to play regularly at a high level. His imminent departure on loan to Inter also helps trim the size of Pep Guardiola’s squad.
Manuel Akanji now seems set to leave Manchester City. That is the best move for him and the club. It now remains to be seen if any other players leave City today.
