Aaron Hickey’s hopes of representing Scotland at Euro 2024 are in doubt due to the Brentford man’s hamstring tear.

The 21-year-old full-back last played for the Bees in October’s 2-0 win at Chelsea, but has since been sidelined since with a serious hamstring injury.

There was originally hope he might return this month, but manager Thomas Frank revealed a setback to his recovery six weeks ago.

Hickey is expected to return to training in around three weeks, but will need time to build his match fitness before being ready for the tournament.

Hickey has played 14 times for Scotland and looked a shoo-in for their Euro 2024 squad until his injury. They face Germany, Switzerland and Hungary in the group stage this summer.

Ex-Scotland international Steven Pressley is now the Bees’ head of development and said this week: “Hickey has been really unfortunate with this injury.

“It’s going to be touch-and-go whether he makes the Euros or not. It’s not a case of ruling Aaron out — he might yet make it.”

Meanwhile, Frank revealed last month: “He has had a minor setback.

“I don’t have a return date right now. I hope [he’ll play again this season], but sometimes when players have been out for a while, I like to see them back out on the grass before I make a guess on what’s possible.
