CONMEBOL announced on Monday 25 May that Palmeiras head coach Abel Ferreira has been fined USD 15,000 for an obscene gesture made during the 2-0 CONMEBOL Libertadores win at Sporting Cristal on 5 May.
In Peru, Flaco López and Ramón Sosa scored the goals for Palmeiras. The incident became a major talking point from the match.
The disciplinary notice cited Article 11.2, points b and c, of the confederation’s code. It added that the fine will be automatically deducted from sums payable to Palmeiras by CONMEBOL for television or sponsorship rights.
Ferreira was also expressly warned that any further breach of a similar nature would lead to the application of Article 27, with any resulting consequences.
Explaining his touchline behaviour, Ferreira said he is hardest on a particular forward, frequently instructs him and expects him to be in the gold zone to score. He said the player signalled to him and he replied with a different finger, adding that he treats him like a son but demands goals and does not want him dropping too deep.
