Abel Ferreira was sent off in the second half of São Paulo v Palmeiras at Morumbis on Saturday night after repeated protests at referee Anderson Daronco. Palmeiras won 1-0.
He had already been booked early in the half. Minutes later Daronco showed a second yellow, then red. According to Globo.com, the flashpoint followed strong complaints about a possible uncalled foul on Arias during a Palmeiras counter.
Ferreira reacted with further anger, gesturing repeatedly as he left the pitch to jeers from São Paulo supporters. He also kicked two balls on his way off.
The dismissal means he will not be on the bench against Grêmio on 2 April at 21:30 Brasília time in the ninth round of the Brasileirão. He will also skip Saturday’s press conference, something planned before the match because of a personal commitment.
That absence fits Palmeiras’ rotation within the coaching staff, and it is Ferreira’s turn to visit family in Portugal. He flies to Europe in the early hours of Sunday and is not expected to be with the squad when they reconvene.
It was his third dismissal of the year, and his second in the Brasileirão, the first came against Fluminense. Since arriving at Palmeiras in 2020, he has been sent off 14 times.
