The 31-year-old handed in his notice to the club and has got his release.
Josh Windass has terminated his contract with Sheffield Wednesday and now looks set to join their Championship rivals Wrexham.
Following two months of non-payment across May and June, several Wednesday players handed in their notices to the club with the intention of leaving Hillsborough.
Of the players that did this, only Windass and Michael Smith were successful in their appeals. Smith found a new home quickly, joining Preston North End, and Wednesday's leading scorer from last season is set to do the same imminently. According to Football League World's sister publication GiveMeSport, the 31-year-old has agreed terms with Wrexham.
Windass said in an emotional statement on Instagram, opening up on his Hillsborough departure, that he would always remember his time with the club and that he hoped to see them again soon.
Should he join the Red Dragons, he'll face Wednesday at least twice next season, with the first meeting between the two sides being the Owls' third game of the 2025/26 Championship campaign.
For Lee Hendrie, a Sky Sports pundit, Windass was right to get himself away from the mess that was piling up at Hillsborough. The situation there is still very uncertain, with a massively reduced playing squad and questions over the future of the manager, Danny Rohl.
"The Windass situation, like many others at Sheffield Wednesday, it's just been an absolute shambles really, and that's why players are wanting to leave. That's why players have left," Hendrie exclusively told Football League World.
"Wrexham, again, a club that's really striving to go forward and you know, you know what you're getting from Josh Windass. There's no doubt of that.
"I think the situation at Sheffield Wednesday still hasn't been resolved. [It] looks like it probably won't be resolved for the start of the season. I'm sure that it's tempting most players to sort of walk away from the football club.
"I think with the potential that Wrexham have, you know, they're [in the] Championship, and the way things are, you probably feel that they're in a hell of a better state than what Wednesday are.
"So, you know, there's no doubt that Josh Windass will be thinking all of these things and the potential of what the football club can do, and where he can go.
"I think it'd be not a bad move for him at all, and that's him staying in England and proving that, you know, he could be a big player for them."
At 31, Windass doesn't have that many years of football ahead of him. He would've found himself in this free agency position much earlier had Wednesday not triggered a one-year extension clause after the end of last season.
The Owls are the heavy favourites for relegation, and understandably so when you look at the chaos that currently surrounds the club, including the embargo and three-window transfer ban that hangs over them.
As much as Windass will forever be linked with the club and loved by its supporters, why should he put up with non-payment and all the other aspects of the circus that's currently operating in Hillsborough when he could go to a team like Wrexham, who are very much on the up?
