Abysmal Manchester United put in their place by Manchester City in 0-1 defeat | OneFootball

Manchester United welcomed Manchester City to Old Trafford for their fourth Premier League game of the season.

First half

Enzo Fernandez had the first chance of the match as he broke forward, but his shot was blocked by Harry Maguire after three minutes of play.

Lisandro Martinez had the first chance for the home side, but his shot went straight into the hands of Gianluigi Donnarumma.

United had a half-chance on the counter when Marcus Rashford made a fantastic tackle and released Matheus Cunha, but he dragged his shot from distance badly wide.

The home side enjoyed some good possession in City territory but were unable to create any real opportunities with this pressure as the 20th minute ticked by.

The match took an unexpected turn when Phil Foden inexplicably kicked out at Bruno Fernandes in an off-the-ball incident, and Michael Oliver showed a direct red card.

Rashford almost got himself into a great position to open the scoring when Fernandes’ disguised shot found the Englishman in space in the box, but he miscontrolled the ball and it went into the keeper’s hands.

City broke forward in response, but Rayan Cherki’s cross drifted harmlessly wide.

The Red Devils continued to have good possession of the ball but once again struggled to really create any opportunities.

United almost opened the scoring just before half-time when Rashford’s excellent free kick clipped the outside of the post.

The half-time whistle blew with the scores level, but United were left wondering how they could break down a resolute City defence and take advantage of their man advantage in the second half.

Second half

The home side had the first chance of the second 45 minutes when Diogo Dalot volleyed the ball over the crossbar.

Kobbie Mainoo almost sent the Stretford End into raptures when his long range shot hit the post. Moments later Rashford hit the side netting with a shot from inside the box.

Bryan Mbeumo was next to try his luck for the home side but his curled effort went wildly wide.

Matheus Cunha began to come to life in the opening minutes of the second half and after beating a couple of City players, he fired the ball over the bar.

United were punished when Dorgu gave the ball away and Erling Haaland turned in a cross to give the visitors the lead. The home side thought they were saved by the offside flag but VAR overturned the original decision to give City the lead.

Enzo Fernandez almost doubled the away side’s lead but Senne Lammens deflected the ball onto the post.

Fernandes responded with a long range effort but Donnarumma punched it wide.

Mbeumo was next to try his luck but he glanced his header wide of the post.

United were lucky not be punished moments later when Haaland turned a free kick just wide.

With only five minutes left Harry Maguire’s header went wide of the post after a corner kick.

Mbeumo had a last gasp chance to save a draw but the Italian keeper pulled off a stunning save.

The game ended with City winning an impressive victory and Michael Carrick scratching his head to how his side look so lifeless in spite of having a man advantage.
