Serie A referee Daniele Doveri came under scrutiny after Sunday’s heavyweight Serie A clash between fierce rivals AC Milan and Inter Milan.
According to several prominent domestic outlets, the 48-year-old made a correct call as he decided not to award a late penalty to the Nerazzurri, via FCInterNews.
AC Milan claimed a precious 1-0 win in last night’s Derby della Madonnina, courtesy of Pervis Estupinan’s first goal in Serie A.
Furthermore, Massimiliano Allegri’s men have bolstered their faint Scudetto hopes, reducing the gap to table-topping Inter to seven points.
However, with only ten games left to play, the Nerazzurri remain in firm control of their title ambitions.
Though it was a fiercely contested battle between the two Serie A giants, Daniele Doveri did not have to make a single dubious call until second-half stoppages.
However, he made a mess in the final moments of the encounter.
First, he blew the whistle to stop the play when the ball was already in the air, denying Inter a last-gasp equalizer.
Then, he refused to penalize Samuele Ricci for handling the ball inside his own box.
Still, all the leading Italian media outlets backed the veteran referee’s decision, hailing him for making a correct call.
