Serie A outfit AC Milan have been knocked out of the Champions League courtesy of a 2-1 aggregate defeat to Feyenoord.
Milan flew out of the blocks in the second leg of their play-off tie and were rewarded with the opening goal in less than 45 seconds as Santiago Gimenez headed home.
In need of a quick response to the concession of an early goal, Feyenoord started to gain a foothold in the game and had their first attempt in the seventh minute via Jakub Moder’s long-range effort.
Joao Felix had his first sight of goal after 18 minutes, firing over from inside the box after being played through by Jimenez.
Felix was in the thick of things five minutes later when he drew a fine save from Timon Wellenreuther before Theo Hernandez hit the upright from the resulting rebound.
Feyenoord had a rare sight of Mike Maignan’s goal 10 minutes before the interval, but Zepiqueno Redmond was unable to keep his effort down.
Felix continued to pose a threat and drew a fine save from Wellenreuther five minutes shy of the interval, after which the Chelsea loanee set up Rafael Leao for perhaps the half’s best chance.
Milan were in the ascendancy after the break but were dealt a huge blow when Hernandez was shown a second yellow card for simulation.
The home side were not put under any immediate pressure defensively, although their attacking threat significantly withered.
Feyenoord fashioned their best chance of the game just past the midway point of the second half as Antoni Milambo put a header over the bar from close range.
The Dutch outfit’s numerical advantage was starting to tell, and they took the overall lead through Julian Carranza less than 15 minutes after he replaced Redmond.
Milan came close to drawing level on aggregate through Malick Thiaw, but his attempt was saved.
That was Milan’s final significant opportunity to rescue themselves, and they exited the competition.
Feyenoord have continued their unbeaten start to life under interim boss Pascal Bosschaart and will take on either Inter Milan or Arsenal in the last-16.
