AC Milan climbed to the summit of Serie A after overturning a one-goal deficit to beat Fiorentina 2-1 at San Siro.

With the chance to leapfrog their city rivals following Inter’s 1-0 win over Roma the night before, Milan were desperate to make a statement early on.

They almost did within minutes, as Fikayo Tomori found himself unmarked inside the box but blasted over from close range when he really should’ve tested the keeper.

The hosts then wasted another gilt-edged chance midway through the first half, with Strahinja Pavlovic somehow skewing wide from point-blank range, summing up a frustrating opening period for Stefano Pioli’s side.

The game finally came to life ten minutes after the restart when Robin Gosens bundled home from a goal-mouth scramble to give Fiorentina a shock lead.

That strike jolted Milan into gear. Just after the hour mark, Rafael Leão levelled things up with a stunning solo effort, cutting inside before rifling a low drive from 25 yards into the bottom corner - San Siro erupted.

Milan pressed for a winner and almost grabbed it on 76 minutes, but David De Gea pulled off a superb fingertip save to deny Santiago Giménez from close range.

Then came the late drama. With five minutes remaining, VAR intervened to award Milan a penalty after Fabiano Parisi’s tug on Giménez. Leão made no mistake from the spot, sending De Gea the wrong way to complete his brace and Milan’s comeback.

The visitors had nothing left in the tank after that, and Milan comfortably saw out the result.

With this result, AC Milan climbed to the top of Serie A, while Fiorentina stays in the relegation zone.
