Massimiliano Allegri has delivered a remarkably candid assessment of the Serie A title race ahead of AC Milan’s clash with Parma, acknowledging Inter Milan’s dominance while refusing to give up on his side’s slim hopes of reeling them in.

The Milan coach was speaking at his pre-match press conference, where he will be notably absent from the touchline due to suspension following the incident against Como.

Despite sitting seven points behind Inter, Allegri insisted there was still hope.

The coach pointed to the mathematics of a long season.

“The league is still long, there are 39 points available,” he said, with quotes via FCInterNews.

“We have to do our duty, first of all try to beat Parma tomorrow, which won’t be simple.”

Allegri was under no illusions about the scale of the challenge, however.

“Inter are travelling very fast, they have 61 points and could potentially surpass 90 by the end of the season,” he admitted.

“For us to reach that total, we would need 36 points, practically twelve wins and one defeat. That’s just mathematics.”

Yet the Livorno-born coach was clear that Milan would be ready to capitalise on any Nerazzurri slip.

“If Inter drop points and we aren’t good enough to take advantage of their mistakes, the responsibility would be ours,” he said. “But right now, Inter are clearly the favourites to win the title.”
