Sunderland could face competition from potential Europa League opponents AC Milan for Roma’s Matias Soule, with a possible swap framework threatening their interest.

Soule, the former Juventus winger, was linked earlier in the summer after producing seven goals and eight assists in 42 appearances last season. He has three years left on his Stadio Olimpico contract, and Gazzetta suggests Roma could sanction a sale for economic reasons linked to a financial fair play settlement.

Transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano has indicated a departure is a concrete possibility either now or late in the window, adding Milan might act if other options do not materialise.

The player offered little clarity on his return to pre-season, saying he did not know whether he would stay at Roma.

Il Messaggero claims Roma are targeting loan signings before the early September deadline, and that Soule could be allowed to move, with Milan showing interest.

La Repubblica states Roma have resumed talks with Milan, and that Rafael Leao and Christopher Nkunku were floated as potential options to build a deal that could take Soule to San Siro.

There are also claims Sunderland have reignited their interest in the Argentina Under-20 international.
