Luka Modric and Piotr Zielinski have been named the cerebral heart of Sunday’s Milan derby by Gazzetta dello Sport, with both veterans tasked with setting the tempo and dictating the rhythm of their respective sides in what promises to be one of the most tactically nuanced fixtures of the Serie A season.
“If the derby were to be decided by the brainiacs, you would need to ask them,” Gazzetta write, framing the duel between the Croatian and the Pole as one of the defining subplots of the evening.
Both men operate with intelligence and economy rather than pace and power.
And, indeed, in a derby where margins are razor thin, the player who controls the midfield space could prove decisive.

Modric, Gazzetta note, is difficult to pin to any one role.
At Real Madrid he operated as a box-to-box midfielder. For Croatia almost as a number ten. However, “with a player like that, you struggle to compress him into a position.”
Under Allegri, he has shown remarkable humility.
He has been winning the ball back, intercepting, even tackling.
Whether Chivu tasks one or two of his forwards to press the veteran high up the pitch, or leaves that job to Zielinski himself in a man-marking role, is one of the tactical questions of the night.
On Zielinski, Gazzetta are effusive, and use him as the perfect lens through which to assess Chivu’s impact at Inter.
“If you want to evaluate the Romanian coach’s influence on Inter, starting with the Pole is a good basis for praise,” they write.
Zielinski has publicly stated his preference for a mezzala role rather than the regista position, yet Calhanoglu’s prolonged absence forced the switch.
And,indeed, under Chivu’s guidance, he has thrived.
Five league goals and one in the Champions League underline a contribution that goes well beyond the tidy passing and positional discipline.
“He may not have Modric’s geometry,” Gazzetta conclude, “but don’t give him half a metre outside the area. Just ask Juventus.”
