As previously reported, Real Madrid could be forced into a difficult decision regarding Kylian Mbappe, with the French forward experiencing discomfort in his left knee. 

The issue has been lingering since December 2025, when he pushed himself physically.

That extra effort appears to have taken a toll. Two months on, the knee is still not responding as expected, and the club is now considering a cautious approach. 

As things stand, Mbappe could miss this weekend’s La Liga clash against Real Sociedad.

However, the situation is not being treated as a serious injury. Instead, it is a preventive measure that Real Madrid are willing to take to protect their most important attacking player. 

There is a different perspective

According to Mundo Deportivo, the priority is for the forward to be fully fit for the Champions League play-off match against Benfica on Wednesday, February 18.

Both the player and the club will have the final say, but all signs suggest they are leaning towards focusing on Europe. 

The Champions League has suddenly become more demanding than expected, with Real Madrid forced into two additional matches after failing to qualify for the round of 16 directly.

The downside of this decision is obvious, as missing the La Liga fixture could prove costly in a title race that is already extremely tight. 

Obvious side effect

Within the club, there is real concern that resting Mbappe, while necessary for his physical condition, could also hurt their domestic ambitions. 

It has been a season full of ups and downs, and securing at least one of the two major titles is now seen as essential.

For that reason, the coming days will be crucial, as Real Madrid must weigh the short-term risk against the long-term reward, knowing that Mbappe’s fitness could define the outcome of their season.
