The Addicks successfully avoided relegation in 2025/26 after gaining promotion from League One, coming 19th in the table.

The London outfit avoided the drop by six points, and will now be aiming to climb the standings over the next 12 months.

Jones will be looking to utilise the summer transfer market to bolster the squad and establish the team as a mid-table side.

The Championship side have added Billy Koumetio, Ivan Mesik and now Karlan Grant, who has arrived as a free agent.

The club have until 1 September to complete their remaining transfer business before the market shuts for the rest of the calendar year.

Grant has completed his move back to Charlton following his exit from West Brom earlier this summer, re-signing for the Addicks as a free agent.

The forward has posted a message to fans on Instagram regarding his return, simply using the caption: “Home.”

The 28-year-old came through the academy system at the Valley, making his breakthrough into the first team squad in 2014/15 at the age of just 17.

Grant made 80 league appearances for the London outfit before signing for Huddersfield Town in 2019.

Former Charlton teammate Ademola Lookman has responded to Grant’s return to the club where they both came through the academy, posting two raising hands emojis.

Grant joined West Brom in 2020, but he struggled for regular game time in his final season at the Hawthorns.

He made 27 league appearances, including 17 starts, contributing four goals as the team narrowly avoided relegation under James Morrison.

How Charlton Athletic fans feel about Karlan Grant’s return

Charlton fans have expressed a universal delight at seeing Grant return to the club after leaving seven years ago.

Many supporters are glad to see someone with the 28-year-old’s experience join the team at such a reasonable cost.

While some have expressed some reservations over how impactful he can be in Jones’ side, fans are still pleased to see one of their own return to the Valley.

Charlton will begin the new campaign on 15 August with a home clash against Derby County in a 3pm kick-off.

Karlan Grant return is a positive for Charlton Athletic

It would be unwise to go into the new season thinking Charlton should rely on Grant to lead the line every week, but he is still a sensible addition to the squad given he is a free agent.

The forward also knows the club well, and bringing back an academy graduate has an obvious appeal for the fans.

Grant has had a couple of difficult campaigns in recent years, but even so he has still shown he can find the back of the net at a Championship level, making him a very useful squad player to have.

This won’t be the most impressive signing of the summer by any means, but it is likely to be a smart addition to the squad nonetheless.
