Adson’s Copa Sul-Americana form has handed him a timely opening to cement his place under Pedro Emanuel, with injuries up front before Thursday’s meeting with Olimpia at São Januário.

According to Globo.com, Brenner has a left foot injury and will be out for at least the next few weeks while specialists decide whether surgery is required, which could end his Vasco season.

Andrés Gómez also reported foot pain and was withdrawn from the Fluminense derby during the warm-up. He is expected to be rested on Thursday and re-evaluated for Sunday’s game against Santos in the Brasileirão.

The situation opens the door for Adson to turn his cup displays into a sustained run and greater influence under the new coach, who reaches one month in the job on Thursday.

Vasco face Olimpia in the first leg of the last 16 on Thursday at 19h Brasília time at São Januário. The return is on 20 August at Defensores del Chaco in Paraguay.
