AFA approves 2027 neutral semi-finals and creates Recopa de Campeones | OneFootball

The Liga Profesional de Fútbol has approved 2027 regulation changes that will stage Apertura and Clausura semi-finals at neutral venues. The AFA also ratified a new three-team competition, the Recopa de Campeones, taking the season’s official trophies to eight.

According to SuperDepor.com, the board met at the Lionel Andrés Messi complex, chaired by AFA president Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia, with River’s second vice-president Ignacio Villarroel attending after six months away, to adjust competition formats.

Under the 2026 Primera División rules, the play-offs begin at the round of 16 with the top eight sides from Zones A and B of both Apertura and Clausura. All ties are single-leg at the home of the higher-ranked team, a format applied for quarter-finals and semi-finals.

From 2027, the round of 16 and quarter-finals will remain single-leg at the higher seed’s ground. Semi-finals, like the final, will instead be single matches at neutral venues, reversing the plan for hosts to be the better-placed club from the group phase.

The Recopa de Campeones will bring together the winners of the Copa Argentina, Supercopa Argentina and Supercopa Internacional in a triangular format from 2027. If one club holds multiple titles, the berth passes first to the Supercopa Argentina runners-up, then the Supercopa Internacional runners-up, then the Copa Argentina runners-up.

Argentina’s eight official trophies per season will be Torneo Apertura, Torneo Clausura, Campeón de Liga o Tabla Anual, Copa Argentina, Trofeo de Campeones, Supercopa Internacional, Supercopa Argentina and Recopa de Campeones.
