The Argentine Football Association will on Friday appeal FIFA sanctions for Leandro Paredes, Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada and assistant Roberto Fabián Ayala, issued after the 2026 World Cup final against Spain.
According to SuperDepor.com, it will first request the full written reasons within the 10-day window, then file to FIFA’s Appeals Committee, with TAS a potential next step if the bans are not reduced.
AFA’s legal department moved immediately after receiving the notices, aiming chiefly to cut the number of matches imposed on the Argentina players.
Paredes received the heaviest punishment, a 10-match suspension and a fine of 90,000 dollars. Molina was given seven matches and another 90,000 dollars, while Almada got one match and 30,000 dollars.
Ayala, part of Lionel Scaloni’s staff, must serve a three-match suspension and pay 30,000 dollars. The suspensions apply only to official senior internationals and do not affect club duties.
The AFA is particularly concerned about Paredes and Molina, whose 10 and seven-match suspensions would rule them out of numerous early fixtures in the new post-World Cup cycle.
The federation will also seek to review institutional penalties arising from World Cup incidents. These include 321,000 dollars in fines and a 50 percent capacity restriction for the next official home match, with a second similar sanction suspended on probation.
Case files cite post-final incidents, discriminatory chanting and behaviour by spectators, throwing of objects, security protocol breaches and the display of a “Las Malvinas son argentinas” flag after the semi-final against England.
