In the day’s late kick-off, a Gabon side without Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made a winning start against AFCON debutants Comoros.

Aaron Boupendza found the net with a brilliant finish from an impossible angle for what proved to be the only goal of the game.

Boufal breaks Ghana’s resistance

Scorers: Boufal 83′

Morocco left it late for victory in their Group C opener in Yaoundé on Monday as Sofiane Boufal struck to break Ghana’s hearts.

It was a largely flat contest which was low on major incident and chances until the final seven minutes, when Morocco pounced to win it.

That came via a break down the right and when the ball broke fortuitously to Boufal in the box, he swivelled to fire home the winner.

Sylla gets Guinea off to perfect start

Scorers: Sylla 35′

A lone goal from Issiaga Sylla saw Guinea overcome Malawi in a tight affair from Bafoussam.

That winner came 10 minutes before half-time when Sylla scored from close range after quick feet in the penalty area from José Kane to tee him up.

It could have been more comfortable for Guinea but Ernest Kakhobwe pulled off a phenomenal double save before half time to deny Aguibou Camara twice and put himself in the headlines.

Mané leaves it late for Senegal win

Scorers: Mané 90+7′ (pen)

A Sadio Mané penalty in injury time saw Africa Cup of Nations favourites Senegal escape an upset in their opening game of the competition.

The first half was dominated by the Lions, who went close through Bouna Sarr in the game’s first real chance. That effort, dragged across goal, started a spell of pressure but Mané couldn’t net the opener after a superb run, before the Liverpool winger laid on a huge chance for Idrissa Gueye who missed.

Senegal boasted far more possession, as expected, but struggled to create anything outside of that period of dominance midway through the first half.

Zimbabwe posed a threat on the break themselves but couldn’t create anything clear cut and were seconds away from a surprise draw before stoppage time. An effort from Crystal Palace’s Cheikhou Kouyaté srtuck the arm of Kelvin Madzongwe and a penalty was awarded.

Mané made no mistake, firing home from the spot to spare Senegal’s blushes in the final seconds of the game.
