African federation presidents are said to have sounded out Mattias Grafström about replacing Gianni Infantino as FIFA president, amid questions over Infantino’s position. The Guardian reports that figures in American football have also tested whether the Swede would turn away from his boss.

Grafström, 45, had initially distanced himself from the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) plan, led by Infantino and proposing the sale of World Cup stakes, before reversing his stance hours later in a letter expressing full support for Gianni Infantino.

He also informed FIFA staff that the organisation’s number three, Kevin Lamour, who had strongly criticised the FFE, was dismissed on Monday 17 August.

Despite his public backing, Grafström is understood to have spoken with two African federation presidents last week, and about 15 federations on the continent could be prepared to break with the FIFA president.

One executive committee member has suggested he could unite the continents and described him as open-minded and attentive.
