An African midfielder is now ready to join Liverpool.

Among the many eyebrow-raising decisions Richard Hughes made during his time at Anfield, not signing a midfielder over the course of the last summer transfer window was probably the most baffling one.

When Curtis Jones departed the club, it felt inevitable that Liverpool would reinforce their ranks.

Alas, no move was made. Liverpool decided to keep their powder dry. The fact that they still had Federico Chiesa and Wataru Endo registered as non-homegrown players probably had something to do with it.

Liverpool simply could not make further additions unless a sale was made. Hughes struggled to sell those players who were out of favour at Anfield.

It was a pretty terrible state of affairs, and it has left Andoni Iraola in a huge predicament.

Andoni Iraola's massive midfield headache

The official line from the club was that the reason why Curtis Jones was not being replaced in the market is because the Reds are going to promote Trey Nyoni.

Yet four games into the season, and Iraola has not really used Nyoni a lot.

Despite Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai not really working as a midfield duo, the Spaniard has continued to persist with them.

It did not work against Fulham on Saturday afternoon. Gravenberch and Szoboszlai contested 10 ground duels in the game and won just two of them.

Szoboszlai lost all six of his ground duels. That's not a great look for a midfielder. Liverpool need midfielders who win their duels and who can reprise possession in the middle of the park.

It's why they need a new addition.

Lamine Camara confirms he's ready to join Liverpool

It's ironic that while this game was going on against Fulham, the Reds' summer and likely January target, Lamine Camara was having a spectacular game for Monaco.

Camara registered an assist against Strasbourg and was one of the best players on the pitch.

Importantly, once again he won the most tackles (4) and the most duels (9) out of anyone on the pitch.

A midfielder who wins tackles? And wins his duels?

This is exactly what Liverpool are crying out for. Camara's performance once again confirmed he is ready to join Liverpool.

Hughes is no longer in charge of the Reds. But whoever is by the time the January window rolls around simply has to sign Camara.
