Better than Beckenbauer, Müller, Matthäus, Kahn and co.: The current Bayern team is setting new standards, but wants more. Bayern boss Max Eberl is calling for the „big titles“
With the 3:1 away win at 1. FC Köln, FC Bayern not only completed the most successful first half of the season in Bundesliga history, but also set another exclamation mark. 47 points, an outstanding goal difference and a dominance that has never been seen before, even at the German record champions. While Vincent Kompany classified the historic moment with his typical sobriety, sporting director Max Eberl found very clear, but at the same time ambitious words – and deliberately focused on what is yet to come
For Max Eberl, there is no question that this first half of the season is something extraordinary. „We’re already going for records. Achieving a record at Bayern Munich means you’ve achieved something extraordinary,“ said the 52-year-old, visibly proud. Words that carry weight, especially at a club whose history is marked by successes, titles and legends. Eberl spoke openly about the fact that this team has achieved something historic. „We’ve played an outstanding first half of the season. Extraordinary,“ he said – and added in the same breath: „But we want more.“
This is precisely the message from Bayern’s sporting director. For him, the record-breaking first half of the season is not the end point, but a foundation. Proof that the path taken is the right one, without resting on it. Despite all the joy and pride, Eberl immediately turned his attention to the future. „We will play for the really big titles in the spring. And we are currently preparing everything for that,“ he made clear

The fact that Bayern can do more than just play dominant possession soccer was particularly impressive for Eberl in Cologne. Just a few days after the 8:1 gala against VfL Wolfsburg, this time it was not an exhibition match, but a tough, physical away game. Munich were even behind after Linton Maina’s goal, had to put up resistance and fight their way into the game
That’s exactly what impressed the sporting director: „That’s what makes us special: we can play soccer and play an opponent to the wall, but we can also hold our own,“ said Eberl with satisfaction. For him, this versatility is the key to being able to survive in the decisive months. Not every victory will be brilliant in terms of play, but it is precisely evenings like this that are essential for title-winning teams
Eberl also made it clear how difficult it is to set new standards at FC Bayern in the first place. In a club that is littered with 34 championships, countless cup wins and Champions League triumphs, records have a special significance. They don’t happen by chance, but are the result of consistency, quality and mental strength
The fact that this team has now achieved something that no Bayern team has done before – not even those with icons such as Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller, Rummenigge, Matthäus, Kahn, Schweinsteiger or Lewandowski – is something that Eberl acknowledges without glorifying it. For him, records are a signal that the team is on the right track, but nothing more
The direction is clear: FC Bayern wants more than just historic figures. The foundations have been laid, but the real test is still to come. Eberl is not thinking in terms of first-round results, but in terms of titles. A double, perhaps even a treble – such scenarios seem realistic in view of the current stability, but are not a foregone conclusion for him
The victory in Cologne, as difficult as it was, fits exactly into this picture. It was a success of mentality, maturity and patience. Qualities that will be decisive in the coming months. Max Eberl has recognized this – and that is precisely why he is consistently looking ahead. The record first half of the season was extraordinary. But at Bayern, only one thing counts in the end: what is won in the spring.
