Lena Oberdorf’s latest forced break is causing major concern at FC Bayern. Now, coach José Barcala has provided an update on the midfielder’s condition.

Lena Oberdorf had just celebrated her comeback after a long period of injury, but now the 27-year-old has to sit out again. FC Bayern recently announced that an issue with her right knee will sideline the German national team player for the coming weeks.

After two cruciate ligament tears within just 15 months, the news understandably caused great concern. However, Bayern coach José Barcala was able to allay some of the worst fears.

“It’s fluid and inflammation in the knee,” the Spaniard explained to BILD. According to him, there is no repeat cruciate ligament tear.

“It happened right after the game against Freiburg. It’s not unusual after a cruciate ligament tear, but she was feeling so good and is therefore extremely disappointed. We all need to stay calm and patient,” Barcala elaborated.

Bayern doesn’t want to take any risks with Oberdorf

For Oberdorf, this latest setback is particularly bitter. She had made her competitive comeback just 316 days after her second ACL tear in the 2-0 win over Mainz. The next success came immediately in the subsequent 4-1 win over Freiburg: Shortly after coming on as a substitute, the midfielder set up Klara Bühl’s goal to make it 3-1.

It is currently unclear when Oberdorf will be able to return to the field. FC Bayern plans to closely monitor the progress of her knee and not rush anything.

“The most important thing right now is to reduce the fluid and inflammation in her knee. Then we’ll see how she can first train on her own and then rejoin team training. We’ll have to take it day by day and week by week,” explained Barcala.

The Bayern coach is nevertheless convinced that Oberdorf will overcome this setback as well: “Lena is incredibly strong—especially mentally. She’ll come through this period just as strong.”

The Bayern women’s team will return to Bundesliga action on Monday against Bayer Leverkusen. On September 22, they’ll face Manchester City in a top-tier matchup to kick off the Champions League. Whether Oberdorf will be available by then remains completely up in the air at this point.
