If Feyenoord win against PEC Zwolle on Friday, Robin van Persie will secure his sixth victory in his first seven league matches as the club’s manager. As per Voetbal International, this will be the first time this has happened in Rotterdam since Bert van Marwijk was appointed for the second time in 2007.
Van Persie was presented as Feyenoord’s new boss on the 23rd of February. While the 41-year-old’s first match saw a 0-0 draw with NEC Nijmegen, all the subsequent matches saw victories against: FC Twente (2-6), Go Ahead Eagles (3-2), FC Groningen (4-1), AZ (0-1) and Fortuna Sittard (0-2).
If Feyenoord manage to beat PEC, Van Persie will equal a series that was last achieved by Bert Van Marwijk. The former Dutch national team coach was at the helm in Rotterdam-Zuid between 2000 and 2004, with a second stint arriving between 2007 and 2008.
In that latter period, Van Marwijk’s record reflected seven wins in the first eight, before duel nine saw defeat away at FC Twente (2-0).
Van Persie recently beat Arne Slot’s formative record from his first season in charge. The current Liverpool coach notched five wins in his first six Feyenoord games, before a 3-1 defeat to FC Utrecht and then a 2-1 loss to Vitesse in his seventh game threw a spanner in the works.
It’s safe to say that, so far, Van Persie has been a welcome step in a new direction after the mutual parting between the club and Brian Priske.
