HSV won a spectacular northern derby against Werder Bremen. Miro Muheim took on an unusual role.

Regular observers of Hamburger Sportverein were astonished when they saw the lineup before kickoff. Coach Merlin Polzin surprised once again with the nominations of Bakery Jatta and Aboubaka Soumahoro, who had failed miserably in the penalty shootout during the cup exit on Wednesday. Nevertheless, he was allowed to start for only the second time since his transfer to HSV.

The 20-year-old replaced Miro Muheim – a seemingly undisputed regular player. Apart from times of injury and suspensions, he was last not part of Hamburg's starting eleven on 06.08.2023 (!) in the 2:2 draw in Karlsruhe. Despite the poor performance against Kiel, sporting reasons alone were not the decisive factor. The left-back himself remained reserved (via Mopo): “I won’t comment on that now.”

Muheim with indiscipline in final training

Polzin was a bit more specific: “There are things in football that are important to keep internal. There were reasons why we decided against starting him today. But this was clarified with the team before the game.” According to Mopo information, there was an incident in the final training on Saturday in which Muheim played a central role by using inappropriate language.

Therefore, the head coach removed him from the starting lineup but entrusted the six-time Swiss international from minute 59. Muheim showed an impressive reaction and was involved in the 1:1 shortly thereafter through a one-two with Jean-Luc Dompé. He even prepared the celebrated 3:2 winning goal with a spirited solo and a precise pass to Yussuf Poulsen.
