French reports say Marseille made formal offer for Sergio Ramos as the veteran defender looks to continue his career at 40.

A shock twist in Ramos future

A major surprise has emerged around the future of Sergio Ramos, with French report revealing that Olympique Marseille made official move to sign the former Spain captain.

After ending his spell with Monterrey, Ramos has been without club. Recent speculation suggested he was close to returning to Sevilla, the club where his professional career began but that option did not progress.

Why a return to Sevilla did not happen

Reports indicated that Monterrey officials were not keen on facilitating return to Sevilla.

The Mexican club’s leadership reportedly dismissed the idea, with claims that Ramos is instead being considered as potential buyer of the club.

This development slowed talks around Sevilla comeback and left Ramos next step unclear despite strong interest in seeing the 2010 World Cup winner return to Spain.

French outlet Foot Mercato reported on Friday that Marseille had already submitted formal offer to Ramos.

The report did not explain why the move failed or whether talks were only postponed.

According to the same source, Rene Ramos the player’s agent and brother, held official discussions during the last transfer window.

However there has been no final decision and the project’s future remains uncertain.

Ramos not ready to retire

Despite turning 40 Ramos has made it clear that retirement is not yet on his mind.

After his contract in Mexico expired, he confirmed his desire to continue playing for at least one more season.

The former Real Madrid captain remains confident he can still compete at high level keeping the door open for return to European football if the right opportunity appears.
