As we approach the final hours of the summer transfer window, it remains to be seen if Manchester United will welcome a sixth signing through the doors at Carrington.

As it stands, the club are yet to formally announce Manuel Ugarte’s switch from Paris Saint-Germain, but numerous reports have confirmed that he’s undergone a successful medical and signed his Red Devils contract.

He will then join Leny Yoro, Joshua Zirkzee, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui as Erik ten Hag’s new recruits for the season ahead – although Ugarte hasn’t been registered in time to face Liverpool on Sunday.

Earlier on deadline day, Sky Sports’ Dharmesh Sheth revealed that United were exploring a move for one of Chelsea’s several outcasts, Carney Chukwuemeka.

Such claims were further corroborated by The Times’ Paul Hirst, who added that Chelsea had hoped to utilise Chukwuemeka as part of their proposal for Jadon Sancho. However, United were uninterested in such a deal.

Any potential pursuit of the 20-year-old would be separate from the clubs’ ongoing Sancho talks.

A versatile midfielder, previously deemed an up-and-coming ‘superstar’ by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Chukwuemeka would add some much-needed depth to Ten Hag’s options in the middle of the park, especially after Scott McTominay’s departure and Mason Mount’s latest injury setback.

Chelsea’s stance on Chukwuemeka is something of a red flag

Yet, Enzo Maresca’s comments as to why the club were open to offloading Chukwuemeka should be a red flag to INEOS chiefs; his concerns over the player were largely due to his frequent layoffs, and adding another injury-prone player to the squad is the last thing Ten Hag needs.

“Carney is a very good player, but because of some injuries in the past, I think it’s important he plays 30 or 35 games in a row,” Maresca told Football.London. “Is he going to play that for us? I’m not sure.”
