Arsenal defender Brooke Norton-Cuffy recently signed a new deal with the club before confirming a loan move is likely this season, adding: “Hopefully, I’ll go to a Championship side and we’ll see what the Championship has to offer.”
Yet in the week after that interview, Norton-Cuffy remained at Arsenal, even joining up with the first team for training sessions.
The created some doubts in the minds of supporters, with some believing the teenager might be set to stick around with Mikel Arteta’s squad this year.
But the player’s agent Alan Redmond has now confirmed a loan to the Championship is still the plan, it’s just a matter of narrowing down their options.
“Of course, you have your plans but then you also need to be flexible because on average I’ll take about 50 to 100 calls a day, half of which were probably unscheduled,” Redmond said.
“In terms of a solid example, we have Brooke Norton-Cuffy who has just signed a new contract at Arsenal, and there are about seven Championship clubs looking to take him on loan.
“Four of them probably think they are in a good position to land him – but only one can.”
Norton-Cuffy had a very strong first loan spell in senior football last season, joining Lincoln City in League One. He made 17 appearances in a few months with the side and earned plenty of praise.
A step up to the Championship seems like the logical next step, particularly given there isn’t much of an opening in the first team for the coming campaign.
Takehiro Tomiyasu is returning from injury to find he has new competition in the form of Ben White at right-back, with Cedric Soares still at the club, and Ainsley Maitland-Niles for cover.
Norton-Cuffy will get his opportunities at Arsenal eventually, if he keeps developing as he has done so far.
