Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor likes what she sees from young England striker Aggie Beever-Jones – and hopes there’s more to come this season.
Beever-Jones was part of the England squad who won the Women’s Euros over the summer, and on her return to pre-season action with her club has impressed onlookers, most recently with a hat-trick at Kingsmeadow against AC Milan in a 4-1 win.
“I’m really proud of Aggie’s performances and what she’s producing with us,” Bompastor told Chelsea’s official website. “She’s able to score and to assist and to help us get the results. I’m glad Aggie is able to focus on herself; that’s something we have been talking about together.
“She’s doing well, and today again, she’s shown she’s ready to start the new campaign. Yes, last season, we were successful, but we are starting again this season. It is an important year for her. She played a lot of minutes with us last year, had good performances, scored a lot of goals, so I hope she can continue in the same way.”
She was also pleased with the overall team performance in their final warm-up match before heading into the Women’s Super League season.
“It was the last game before we start the season, so it was a good result, and I think in terms of performance, it is always good to score four goals,” she added. “I think we played with intensity, which is a big thing I want to see from my team.
“In the first half, Milan were more organised and maybe fresher as well, so it was more difficult to break down their block and to open up the spaces. In the second half, we kept the ball and we produced in both the creation phase and the finishing phase.”
Bompastor refused to confirm one way or the other whether she intended to make any further signings before the transfer window closes, describing herself as “satisfied” with her squad but that the club would always be alert to potential opportunities in the market.
“My job is to make sure we find the right balance between having depth and also having healthy competition. I think with the strategy at this club, we are all aligned with where we want to go. I think it’s really important to have a mix of youth and experience in the squad, because we need to build a squad ready to compete in four competitions.”
Chelsea’s first match of the season is at Stamford Bridge as they take on Manchester City on Friday, September 5th.
