Agirrezabala has left Athletic after his move to Racing Santander was confirmed on Monday. The goalkeeper departs the Bilbao club to begin a new chapter with the Cantabrian side.
The player said in a post that he was grateful to the club, team-mates and supporters, adding that guarding the San Mamés goal alongside the athleticzales had been a huge privilege and that he had been made to feel part of a family.
He makes the switch seeking more minutes and the chance to establish himself as first choice. The 25-year-old has signed until 30 June 2031. Athletic receive a fee and retain performance-related variables, a percentage of any future sale and a right of first refusal.
The agreement ends weeks of complicated talks. Initially, Athletic valued his exit at around seven million euros via a permanent transfer, a figure Racing could not meet early in the summer. That stance also cooled firm interest from Celta de Vigo, who preferred a loan with a non-obligatory purchase option that did not convince Ibaigane.
Negotiations shifted as Racing urgently needed a goalkeeper after Jokin Ezkieta left for Cádiz. With all parties keen to resolve matters before the season gathered pace, a deal was finally struck. Agirrezabala had earlier become a shootout hero in the 2024 Copa final.
