Agirrezabala has undergone surgery on a meniscus injury, a course agreed by Valencia’s medical staff and, above all, Athletic’s. The goalkeeper will miss the rest of the season, bringing his loan at Mestalla to a close.

He suffered the setback in training last Friday, just days before he was due to be passed fit from a muscle problem sustained in January. According to El Chiringuito, the goalkeeper has had an arthroscopy.

On Monday he travelled to Vitoria to consult trusted specialists alongside Athletic doctors, the club he belongs to. The plan is for him to complete his rehabilitation in the Basque Country.

He will be fit to begin the next pre-season, which, as things stand, will be at Lezama. He joined Valencia last summer to replace Mamardashvili and compete with Dimitrievski on a one-year loan, with a purchase option of around 12 million euros that Valencia do not currently intend to exercise.

He departs as a Valencia player with 19 appearances, 18 in the league and one in the Copa del Rey. From day one he was Carlos Corberán’s first choice and earned Mestalla’s respect, until a muscle injury against Celta de Vigo at Balaídos early in the year.
