Michelle Agyemang has emerged as one of the breakout stars of the Euros in Switzerland, playing a key role in guiding England to the final.
The 19-year-old has delivered when it matters most, producing decisive moments in both the quarter-finals and semi-finals to rescue her country – and Sarina Wiegman – in high-pressure situations.
Her defining moment came in the quarter-final against Italy, when she levelled the score with a crucial goal that sparked a dramatic comeback. England would go on to win the match, and Agyemang’s impact captured the attention of fans across the country and beyond.
Heading into the tournament, many were surprised by her inclusion in the squad, particularly given that several key players were left out.
However, her time at Arsenal – along with loan spells at Brighton and Watford – had already offered glimpses of her talent, making a strong case for her selection despite the initial surprise surrounding it.
That potential was further realised in April, when she scored her first goal for the Lionesses in the UEFA Nations League, coming off the bench against Belgium.
Wiegman placed her trust in the youngster, and that faith has paid off. Agyemang has become a secret weapon off the bench when England needs her most.
Now the question is: is she ready to lead the line in the final against Spain, as the Lionesses seek revenge for their 2023 World Cup final defeat?
Leading the line for a nation in the final of any major competition is a huge responsibility, but Agyemang has shown she has what it takes to step up.
That said, Sarina Wiegman’s trust in the youngster may have its limits, as the squad selections have remained largely unchanged throughout the tournament.
With England’s key players logging heavy minutes in both of their last two matches, the need for fresh legs and a possible shake-up could prove crucial going into the final.
Any small advantage England can gain could be the difference-maker as they look to overcome Spain and reclaim the Euros they lifted just three years ago.
