Reports in Spain clarified the situation surrounding Jose Mourinho and his availability for the return match against Real Madrid in Champions League.

The first leg was played at Estadio da Luz where Real Madrid secured 1-0 victory over Benfica in the playoff round for a place in the round of 16 of the 2025 /26 season.

The match was tense from start to finish and included several heated moments between the two side.

Red card confirms touchline ban

The turning point for Benfica’s bench came in the 85 minute when Mourinho was shown red card after receiving two yellow card for protesting against refereeing decisions.

According to Spanish newspaper Marca, the dismissal means Mourinho will not be allowed to sit on the bench for the return leg at Santiago Bernabeu scheduled for Wednesday.

As a result, Benfica will have to manage one of their most important matches of the season without their head coach on the touchline.

Heated night in Lisbon

The first leg also featured controversy on the pitch. Vinicius Junior was booked after celebrating his goal in front of Benfica supporters.

The match later saw further tension after the Brazilian winger was subjected to racist abuse from Benfica player adding to already explosive atmosphere.
