Barcelona star Aitana Bonmatí is set to miss the next five months after fracturing her left fibula.

The Ballon d'Or winner picked up the injury during training whilst on international duty with Spain after falling awkwardly.

"First team player Aitana Bonmatí has undergone successful surgery for a transindensal fracture of her left fibula," the Catalan club said in a statement.

"The surgery was performed by Dr. Antoni Dalmau at the Hospital de Barcelona, under the supervision of the Club's Medical Services. The expected recovery time is around five months."

The news means Bonmatí is likely to miss the majority of the rest of the season, which is a big blow for Barcelona in their attempt to recapture the Champions League.

Bonmatí has played 15 games for her club so far this season in all competitions, scoring six times and making three assists.
