Ajax are well and truly in with a fight for European football. After missing out on the tickets for European football via final Eredivisie positioning, the Amsterdam club are now having to face the lottery of the European play-offs. Their first leg is against FC Groningen. If they get through that, they will face either Utrecht or Heerenveen in the final clash for the European Conference League ticket.
To make matters even worse for Ajax, they are having to play their matches away from home. Clearly no one thought Ajax would be in this position, with Harry Styles set to play a gig at their usual home. Now the club are set to play both of their matches in Volendam, a stadium that is also having to host the promotion/relegation play-off between Willem II and FC Volendam.
For Ajax, the prospect of missing out on European football feels unheard of. The side have not missed a European campaign since 1991. Last season, Francesco Farilio had the side in with a chance of the title, but he has since left and the club have declined once again. To add insult to injury, Farioli has just won the league with Porto.
In their head to head clashes this season, Ajax and Groningen split the two matches. Both sides won their home legs, but will Ajax having to play this ‘home’ game away from home actually be to their disadvantage? Expect plenty of movement this summer should Ajax fail to qualify for European football this season.
