Sunderland paid £nine million for Craig Gordon, a British record for a keeper, and he made 94 appearances. Ankle trouble in 2008-09, a broken arm in 2009 and knee surgery in 2010-11 wrecked momentum. He later logged 242 games at Celtic and now plays for Hearts.

Fraizer Campbell missed around 18 months after tearing knee ligaments in a 1-0 win over Manchester City early in 2010-11, having scored four the previous season. He later left for Cardiff in January 2013 and won his only England cap in February 2012.

Duncan Watmore emerged under Sam Allardyce, scoring in a 2-0 win over Stoke in November 2015. An ankle injury during a 2-2 draw at Anfield was followed by a serious knee injury against Leicester in December 2016. Another knee setback came in 2017, further issues followed, and he departed after 2019-20.

Jordan Willis joined from Coventry in summer 2019 and played 36 of 37 games in the Covid-hit season. A patellar tendon rupture in a 2-1 defeat at Shrewsbury the following campaign ended his Sunderland career after 15 league outings. He later spent a short spell at Wycombe and now plays for Northampton.
