Al Ahly fined players after a league defeat and began full football department review before facing Esperance in CAF Champions League.

Financial penalties after League setback

Al Ahly has imposed financial penalties on its first-team players after recent poor results in the Egyptian Premier League as the club prepares for a crucial match against Esperance in Champions League.

The decision came after Al Ahly suffered a 2-1 defeat against Talaea El Gaish in postponed league match on Monday.

The loss weakened the club’s position in the title race.

Following the result, Al Ahly remained third in the table with 40 point from 20 match while Zamalek & Pyramids share the top spot with 43 point. Zamalek still has one postponed match against ENPPI.

Club announces sanctions and early travel plan

According to a statement shared on the club’s official social media channels, Mahmoud El Khatib president of Al Ahly approved several disciplinary measures.

The club decided to deduct 30% of the players’ monthly salaries and freeze 25% of their contract payments until the team’s position in both the domestic league and Champions League becomes clear.

Al Ahly also decided to bring forward the team’s travel to Tunisia for Champions League quarter final first leg. The squad will now leave Cairo on Thursday instead of Friday to allow more preparation time for the match.

Full review of the football department

Alongside the financial sanctions, the club launched a broad evaluation of its football structure. Vice president of the club and board member have started reviewing all staff working in the football department.

The review will include technical, administrative and medical teams as well as youth teams, women’s football and club academies.

The goal is to restructure the sector to meet the expectations of the club and its supporters.

Key Champions League test ahead

Al Ahly the most successful club in CAF Champions League history now faces important test against Esperance in the quarter-finals.

The first leg will take place in Rades, Tunisia, early next week while the return match will be played in Cairo later in March.
