Cape Verde Islands secured a historic World Cup qualification in their tournament debut, finishing Group H unbeaten after a tense 0-0 draw with Saudi Arabia in Houston. The result, combined with Spain's victory over Uruguay, sent the second-smallest nation at the tournament into the round of 16 to face Argentina.

Both goalkeepers produced outstanding displays to preserve the deadlock, with Mohammed Al-Owais denying Laros Duarte from point-blank range in the 75th minute and Vozinha saving from Abdullah Al-Hamdan in stoppage time. GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from Cape Verde Islands v Saudi Arabia.

Winners

Mohammed Al-Owais (Saudi Arabia)

The Saudi Arabia goalkeeper produced a heroic display that kept his side in the match despite ultimately failing to prevent elimination. His defining moment came in the 75th minute when he made what was described as a miraculous save to deny Laros Duarte from point-blank range after the Cape Verde substitute had been played through one-on-one.

Al-Owais had already shown his quality earlier in the contest, getting down well to palm away Willy Semedo's low effort in the 22nd minute before comfortably denying Jamiro Monteiro early in the second half. His awareness to deal with crosses and through balls throughout demonstrated the command he held over his penalty area.

Without his interventions, Saudi Arabia would have been eliminated before the final whistle. Al-Owais took the captain's armband when Salem Al-Dawsari was substituted and showed leadership in the closing stages, though his individual brilliance could not save his team from World Cup exit.

Vozinha (Cape Verde Islands)

The Cape Verde goalkeeper delivered another commanding performance in his nation's historic World Cup campaign, making three important saves to preserve the clean sheet that secured qualification. His reflexes and positioning proved vital throughout as Saudi Arabia searched desperately for the goal they needed to stay in the tournament.

Vozinha dealt comfortably with Mohamed Kanno's header in first-half stoppage time, then showed excellent reactions to stretch and catch Mohammed Abu Al-Shamat's curling cross-shot that threatened the top corner. His most crucial intervention came in the 92nd minute when he denied Abdullah Al-Hamdan from close range during a one-on-one situation.

Taking the captain's armband after Ryan Mendes was substituted in the 71st minute, Vozinha marshalled his defence through a tense closing period. His assured displays throughout the group stage have been central to Cape Verde's remarkable qualification for the knockout rounds in their first-ever World Cup appearance.

Loser

Abdullah Al-Hamdan (Saudi Arabia)

The substitute striker squandered Saudi Arabia's clearest opportunity to stay in the World Cup when presented with a gilt-edged chance in the 92nd minute. Having entered in the 66th minute to add attacking presence, Al-Hamdan found himself one-on-one with Vozinha after a neat exchange with Firas Al-Buraikan inside the box.

With the goal at his mercy and Saudi Arabia's tournament hopes hanging in the balance, Al-Hamdan's right-footed shot lacked power and conviction. Vozinha gathered comfortably to extinguish Saudi Arabia's final realistic chance of finding the breakthrough they desperately needed to avoid elimination from the group stage.

The moment encapsulated a frustrating cameo where Al-Hamdan showed promising link-up play but failed to deliver the decisive contribution his team required. His inability to capitalise on the clearest opening of the closing stages sealed Saudi Arabia's World Cup exit and highlighted the fine margins that separate qualification from elimination.
