Both clubs have come up to the Championship from League One this year while heavily investing in their first team squads.

The two sides have ambitious owners from America and Canada that have earned high profiles in their own right for their spending.

The Red Dragons have earned three promotions in the last three years to win their place in the second division, while the Blues came straight back up in emphatic fashion after suffering relegation to the third tier in 2024.

Birmingham haven’t competed in the top flight since their 2011 relegation, while Wrexham’s highest position in the football pyramid prior to now was a handful of years in the second division from 1978 to 1982.

Shearer believes Ryan Reynolds and Tom Brady, a minority investor at Birmingham, are both chasing Premier League promotion at their respective clubs.

However, he has predicted that it won’t happen this season for either of them, and that it might take a few years before they achieve their ultimate goals.

"Ryan Reynolds and Tom Brady are chasing the dream of Premier League football, I guess," said Shearer, via Birmingham Live.

"They're looking at huge football clubs which Wrexham and Birmingham are to try and chase the dream of getting to the promised land.

“Certainly, in Ryan Reynolds' view, they're closer to it than they thought they would be.

"They're not far away now albeit I don't think they'll get promoted this season, but they all want a bit of the Premier League because wherever you are, it's remarkable.

"I think they will both be in the Premier League in the near future, I do.”

Shearer sees a lot of potential for both clubs to continue growing as long as their owners continue to invest as heavily as they have up to now: “If they continue to invest like they have done, how they get around PSR is a different matter, but they look at clubs who have been drifting, but look at the history, how big they are and how big they can become in the area that they're in.

“And both Birmingham and Wrexham are huge.

"There's a chance to grow them even bigger and there's also a chance they get what they want and reach the Premier League."

Birmingham and Wrexham have both struggled for consistent results since gaining promotion from League One.

However, neither look to be in danger of a relegation battle either, which is a positive first step to take after earning their place at this level.

Phil Parkinson and Chris Davies have both come under scrutiny this season for the inconsistent results that Wrexham and Birmingham have endured so far, but neither are in immediate danger of being replaced.

Birmingham and Wrexham’s ambitions are clear

The owners at both clubs have made it clear through their actions that they want to see their respective sides competing in the Premier League at some point soon.

Investment into both the first team squad and the infrastructure has shown a lot of commitment to their respective projects, and they will want the reward of Premier League football as a result.

This does put pressure on Parkinson and Davies to continue achieving great results, with very little room for the kind of inconsistency we’ve seen so far this season.

Wrexham should be a bit more realistic and should be happy to solidify their position at this level for now given where they’ve come from, but the level of spending at Birmingham does come with greater expectations for this season and next.
