Alan Shearer has backed Sunderland’s stance on Granit Xhaka and labelled Chelsea’s reported opening offer for the midfielder embarrassing.
Xhaka has been the subject of heavy speculation, with Chelsea said to be keen to reunite the Sunderland captain with Xabi Alonso.
“Sunderland bought Granit Xhaka for £17m and he was one of the best players in this Premier League last season,” he told The Metro. “He wasn’t just one of the best players at Sunderland, but in the Premier League.”
Reports have claimed Chelsea tested the water with an offer well below the £17m Sunderland paid last summer after signing him from Bayer Leverkusen.
“It’s embarrassing from Chelsea, really. I mean, they’re clearly not getting him for that amount.”
Xhaka is under contract until 2028 and Sunderland are under no pressure to sell. The club are understood not to welcome bids at this stage, viewing the midfielder as not for sale.
