Newcastle United winning 1-0 against the England and NUFC legend’s first ever club.

We all know that there is no doubt where Alan Shearer’s loyalties lie, however, he didn’t need to be biased when he talked about what everybody had witnessed in this game.

The big talking point of course, was Fabian Schar’s 28th minute red card and the part played by Ben Brereton Diaz in that decision (not to mention the referee and the VAR…).

Schar jumps up and there is a coming together, then BOTH players move their heads forward.

The Southampton player then humiliating himself by collapsing to the ground to try and get Schar sent off.

This was the opinion of Alan Shearer on the incident, speaking on Match of The Day – 17 August 2024:

“They (Newcastle United) can’t have too many complaints, you know the laws, if you put your head into someone then you run the risk of red card.

“He (Fabian Schar) takes the bait completely and it is just embarrassing what Ben Brereton Diaz does and the way he reacts like that.

“It really is embarrassing.

“It is not nice to see.

“What I would say, is that they both put their heads in together.

“They both put their heads together and it just the way that he (Ben Brereton Diaz) goes down (that gets Schar sent off).

“It is a red card, I am not going to complain about that, he deserves it and they are going to be punished.

“If anything, it will probably put another £5m on the Marc Guehi fee, if they are going to try and get him, he (Fabian Schar) misses the next three games.”
