Alan Shearer praised Sunderland, saying “They deserve it” after a final-day win over Chelsea sealed the club’s first European qualification in 53 years.

The Black Cats finished seventh in the Premier League, one year on from promotion via the Championship play-offs, with a 2-1 victory at the Stadium of Light and favourable results elsewhere. According to Sunderland Echo, the squad huddled around a phone after full-time before celebrating once confirmation arrived.

Shearer said it had been a brilliant season, highlighting the impact of signing 14 players last summer for around £160 million and the importance of strong home form. He also noted Sunderland defeated Newcastle home and away.

He later added that, despite his Newcastle ties, respect was due, acknowledging it hurt that Sunderland turned their rivals over twice. He said the manager had done an unbelievable job.

Shearer described it as incredible for a promoted side to reach the Europa League and said securing a place capped a great season for Sunderland.
