FLW look at three potential managers that could replace Alan Sheehan at Swansea City
With Alan Sheehan facing pressure over his job at Swansea City after a mixed start to the season, here are three potential managers that could replace him in the dugout.
It's been quite an up and down season so far, by Swansea City's standards, under the management of Alan Sheehan, with the Welsh outfit currently sitting in mid-table with twelve points on the board.
After going a whole month unbeaten in all competitions from the middle of August to September, recent results have been fairly mixed for Sheehan's side, which have drawn question marks over his name.
Disappointing losses to Birmingham and most recently Leicester have led to fans wanting more in the early stages of the season. With Swansea supporters calling for a change in the dugout sooner rather than later, it's evident to see that all involved at the club want to push further up the table and strive for those play-off spots that have eluded them in recent years.
The Swans have finished in 11th, 14th, and 10th in consecutive seasons, highlighting the stalemate that the club are at. Despite Sheehan only taking over the reins as boss at the end of April, it looks as though another mid-table finish is on the cards unless a significant change is made.
There is, of course, no evidence right now to suggest the Swans' hierarchy are set to take imminent action on Sheehan, but he is indeed under growing pressure and scrutiny from supporters and, without an upturn in form, could find his days in the dugout numbered.
So, with that said, Football League World takes a look at three managers that could take Sheehan's place and lead the Swans to some success that the fans have been longing for, for quite some time now.
One man that could fit the bill for Swansea City is the current Lincoln City boss, Michael Skubala. After beginning his managerial career in 2023 when he was appointed as interim head coach for Leeds United in the Premier League, it wasn't long after until he was handed his first full-time role by League One side Lincoln in November 2023.
Since his arrival in Lincolnshire, his time with the Imps has been a successful one, and he has built a solid rapport with the fans over the past couple of years.
After leading his side to an 11th place finish in League One last year, Skubala and his side have really kicked on this campaign and sit pretty in the play-offs with only two losses from their opening 11 League games.
Despite Skubala being inexperienced when it comes to Championship experience, the signs are there that he is a manager who can be trusted to make the step-up a division. Not only due to his positive spell with Lincoln so far, but also on a personal note, Skubala will for sure be looking to test himself in the higher divisions of English football and Swansea City could well be a solid destination for him.
Despite having a horror spell in his most recent appointment with Sheffield United, Championship fans are very familiar with what Ruben Selles can bring to the table if he were to become Swansea City manager.
After just about guiding Hull City to safety in the 2024/25 campaign prior to joining the Blades at the start of the season, Selles looks to get his managerial career back on track. His aggressive and attacking style of football could suit that of the Swans with players like Zan Vipotnik and Ronald at their disposal, and he could get the frontline firing on a more consistent basis than what we have seen so far this season.
Although the arrival of Selles could worry Swansea fans, he is a manager with Championship experience that if the players buy into his ideas and system, and really form a togetherness within the group that was absent whilst at Sheffield United, then Swansea could well creep up the table under his leadership.
After being sacked as Middlesbrough boss last season due to a decline in form, we cannot forget all the good that Michael Carrick did for his previous club and his guidance could be a perfect fit for Swansea.
Carrick took Boro to the play-off semi-finals after finishing 4th at the end of his first season in charge and to the semi-finals of the EFL Cup in 2024.
Carrick turned around a struggling Middlesbrough side at the time, so will know what is expected of him if he was to come in the door at Swansea. His man management and the respect he earns from his players after an outstanding playing career with Premier League giants Manchester United is a factor that would excite Swans fans.
The level of intelligence that Carrick showed on the pitch certainly translated into his managerial career and his first half a season in charge of Boro. Therefore, with Swansea searching for someone to come in and be an instant hit, Carrick could be the man.
