In 2026, INEOS hope to further strengthen Ruben Amorim’s squad as they edge closer to assembling his dream team.
Yet, while they look to add reinforcements, Manchester United’s
Tough decisions will have to be made regarding several current players, with contracts for the likes of Casemiro and Harry Maguire set to expire next summer. INEOS face the difficult choice of whether to extend those deals or let them run out.
As the hierarchy weigh up whether to let the duo leave, former Manchester United striker Alan Smith, writing for Manchester World, has urged them to make the wise decision on Casemiro.
“I think it is great if he’s used in the right way,” said Smith. “When they went to Liverpool, to Anfield, he was brilliant.”
“I feel like he might not be able to play every game. If you use him in the right way, I’m sure he can be a real asset, especially in the big games where he’s definitely got the experience.”
“You need experience, and there’s a lot of work that goes on between Saturday game to Saturday game around the place and in the dressing room, where he might bring a hell of a lot as well.”
Few could argue with Smith’s claims. He is clearly advocating for Casemiro’s contract to be extended, and United would be wise to listen.
Casemiro has become an integral part of Amorim’s tactical plan, forging an understanding with Bruno Fernandes that reflects the Portuguese tactician’s demands of his midfielders. If he stays, he could prove invaluable in helping new midfield recruits adapt to Amorim’s system.
United do hold the option to extend his deal by a year. However, reports suggest his wages are too high. INEOS are reluctant to trigger the extension as they look to trim United’s wage bill.
Yet, talks are expected over an entirely new contract, potentially involving a pay cut, though whether the Brazilian agrees remains to be seen.
Should United ignore Smith’s advice and allow Casemiro to depart, the consequences could be significant. There have been suggestions that Fernandes and Marcus Rashford might follow him out the exit door, paving the way for a £250 million midfield overhaul.
Apparently, United are ready to sacrifice the trio to bring in Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton and Carlos Baleba, fresh faces intended to reshape Amorim’s midfield for the future.
