Blackburn’s dismal start to life under Valerien Ismael has already raised questions about the Frenchman’s long-term future.
Blackburn Rovers still find themselves in the race for the top six but will need a mammoth effort to turn around such a poor run of form under Valerien Ismael.
The Lancashire outfit have occupied a play-off place for the majority of the second tier season but now find themselves 11th in the table and five points off the top six with just seven games remaining of the campaign.
Rovers’ latest defeat to Portsmouth over the weekend was a hammer blow to making a return to the top six, with Blackburn’s form mirroring a relegation-threatened side at this moment in time.
It’s been a complete contrast in fortunes since John Eustace departed the club, with Blackburn last tasting victory under caretaker boss David Lowe when Blackburn won 2-0 at West Brom in the beginning of February.
Such an alarming run of results has already left Blackburn fans questioning whether the appointment of Ismael was the correct call, as the former Barnsley and West Brom coach continues to struggle to piece a system together that suits the current crop of players.
If this carries on too much longer, you have to feel it’s only a matter of time before Ismael is removed from his post at Ewood Park.
Valerien Ismael is still on the search for his first victory as Blackburn boss, and the club did make a positive start when securing a last-gasp draw against Norwich City at Carrow Road.
However, goalscorer Andi Weimann suffered a season-ending injury during the game, which has resulted in Blackburn lacking much-needed firepower.
Winnable games on paper, Blackburn played relegation-threatened Derby County, Stoke City and Cardiff City prior to their clash with Pompey, and Ismael’s outfit failed to take a single point from those games – a catastrophic return.
Blackburn were expected to get a healthy number of points on the board heading into a tougher run which sees the club clash with play-off chasing Middlesbrough as well as Danny Rohl’s Sheffield Wednesday, while Blackburn also have to contend with Sunderland, Watford and Sheffield United before the close of the season, with many scratching their heads as to where the points are coming from.
It has the potential to be a rather toxic end to the campaign, which, for the most part, had gone swimmingly under Eustace.
Overall, from five games, Ismael has failed to secure a victory, while only collecting one draw and suffering four defeats in that time.
With Blackburn undergoing the exact opposite of a new manager bounce, Blackburn supporters are undoubtedly going to be deeply frustrated and seeking answers as to what’s going wrong.
Such a rocky period for the club, the Rovers faithful have already echoed their frustration towards the 49-year-old, with many fans desperately worried about the football club both on and off the pitch.
If results go from bad to worse and Ismael is in charge of the club next season, then fears could arise about a possible relegation battle in the Championship, which is a far cry from the highs they shared with John Eustace and the dreams of an eagerly-awaited Premier League return.
Ismael will have to find solutions quickly to turn the club around, or it could be a very short spell in charge and another unsuccessful venture in English football.
