Cádiz CF and Imanol Idiakez have decided to part company after a bleak pre-season marked by poor results and disagreements over recruitment. The coach, who arrived late last season, departs four days before the league opener against Real Celta B, with his exit still to be finalised.

The club must now move quickly to appoint a successor. Radio Cádiz reports that Albert Celades is the frontrunner to take charge, while Onda Cero Cádiz also places him at the head of the shortlist.

Although Celades is the name sounding loudest, Cádiz are weighing alternative options. Celades has not coached since April. He returned to the dugout with Pafos FC in January after Juan Carlos Carcedo left, but was dismissed before the end of the campaign by Ricardo Sá Pinto.

His record in Cyprus stood at nine wins, six draws and six defeats in 21 matches.

That stint was his first role since leaving Valencia CF, where he replaced Marcelino García Toral. He took Valencia into the UEFA Champions League round of 16 with notable away wins at Chelsea and Ajax.

In a season extended by the Covid-19 pandemic, Valencia dismissed him with six matches to play, when they were eighth and one point off Europe, a level the club have not reached since.
