Albert Gronbaek joined Hamburg on loan from Rennes in January, with a purchase option of around five million euros, and Bild reports the Bundesliga's 12th-placed side could seek to keep him by negotiating it.

The Danish attacking midfielder endured a long injury lay-off but is ending the campaign well, scoring and assisting in Frankfurt in a 2-1 result at the weekend.

He arrived at Rennes from Bodo/Glimt in summer 2024 for 12 million euros excluding bonuses, on a five-year deal.

After struggling in Brittany, he has been sent out on successive loans to Southampton, Genoa and, since January, Hamburg.

For now, the two clubs have not yet started concrete talks about a permanent transfer.
