Riera, 44, would return to the dugout after being dismissed in Frankfurt in May. A former Bordeaux player, he coached the club in 2023-2024.

This would be his sixth role as a head coach. He has also worked in Slovenia, leading Olimpija Ljubljana in 2022-2023 and Celje in 2023 then 2024-2026. With Celje he reached the Europa Conference League quarter-finals in 2025.

Red Star have dropped into the Europa League play-offs and will face Viktoria Plzen on 20 and 27 August to qualify for the competition.
