Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 3 games

Article image:Albion’s Second Tier Season Comparison – 3 games

A fourth goal of the season for Josh Maja proved to be the winner for the Baggies after Lewis Koumas had equalised Karlan Grant’s first league Albion goal for almost two years, although he did net in the FA Cup game at Chesterfield in January 2023.

The victory left Albion in fourth place with seven points having won their opening two away matches for the third time in 15 years. On the previous two occasions, in 2009 and 2019, the Baggies drew their opening league game at home and went on to win automatic promotion. The last time an Albion side won their first three away league games was at the start of the 1953/54 campaign.

Only three times in the last 75 years has a Baggies team bettered this season’s points tally at this stage by winning their opening three games of a league campaign, the most recent being in 1997/98 when Ray Harford’s team beat Tranmere Rovers at home, Crewe Alexandra away and then Wolves at home (thanks to the infamous Keith Curle own goal). The previous two occasions were in 1992/93 under Ossie Ardiles and in 1978/79 under Ron Atkinson – two memorable campaigns.
