Alejandro Dominguez renews push for 64-team 2030 World Cup

Alejandro Dominguez, the Conmebol president, has revived his call to expand the 2030 World Cup to 64 teams after the 2026 finals concluded. He said in a post on X that the idea should be back on the table.

The 2030 tournament will be staged mainly in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with a few opening matches in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay. Dominguez wants the planned 48-team format increased to 64.

He framed the centenary edition, 100 years after the first World Cup in Uruguay in 1930, as a major opportunity for the game. He argued that a 64-team field would best mark the occasion.

Such an expansion would also bring more matches to South America, a key aim behind the push.

Conmebol lodged a request with FIFA in April 2025 seeking the change, but the matter has not been decided.
