"I never swapped a Flamengo shirt with anyone. I thought the Flamengo shirt was the best in the world," said Alejandro Mancuso.

"They were p***** off because I was a guy who liked to fight. I was fiery, very hot-blooded. But the funniest thing was, when it ended, it was the first thing they asked me," he told GE TV.

The midfielder joined Flamengo in 1996 from Palmeiras after coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo allowed the switch, and his drive turned him into a fans' favourite. His time in Brazil left the Argentine feeling almost Brazilian. Since he first pulled on the shirt, the club have collected numerous honours, including three Brazilian league titles and three Copa Libertadores.

Among his trophies in red and black was the Copa de Ouro, won unbeaten at the Maracanã. Flamengo beat São Paulo 3-1 in the final.

During that spell he lined up with Athirson, Sávio, Fábio Baiano and Nélio, and that year defender Juan stepped up to the senior side.
